The year 2012 was the year I was very obsessed with the indie rock albums of fun. and Foster The People. Expect all tracks from “Some Nights” and “Torches” in the list.

Another artist that I became a follower of that year was Adele Adkins. From releasing her live video album ‘Live At The Royal Albert Hall,’ to winning big in the GRAMMYs, to being the first female solo act to place 3 songs in the top 10 of Billboard Hot 100 concurrently, the English singer-songwriter was indeed the Artist of the Years 2011 to 2012. Top Song Picks of 2002 & 2007

Welcome to Spinnin’ Rabbit‘s “Top Picks of Each Year,” where I’ll be taking you back in time and sharing with you what were my favorite songs from the past. Here’s the list per year so far: 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, and last year.

John Mayer‘s debut single, ‘No Such Thing,’ was my song pick two decades ago. I still remember this was one of the songs played on Cebu CHR/Top40 radio station UR105 Ultimate Radio before the frequency was reformatted to adult contemporary in the summer of 2002. Recently, I just found out the actual meaning of the song. It is about creating your career path.

Five years later, American singer, Akon released his third single, ‘Don’t Matter‘ from his second studio album, “Konvicted.” The reggae fusion-R&B song was my favorite back in 2007. We can hear the lively Calypso Remix in the final scene of the music video.

    How a debut single became an instant commercial success blows my mind. The dreamy bridge (“I still f*g love you”) is one of the greatest, most beautiful moments I’ve heard for a pop song in a while.

Don’t be confused when you also see the original “Savage” version at number 26. I first heard the solo release through TikTok videos before this equally good remix.

7. Sunday Best – Surfaces
Its first line perfectly describes the song: “Feeling good, like I should”.

6. Imahe – Magnus Haven (Top Philippine Song)
The alternative rock band’s song released in 2018 is the most-streamed song based on Spotify Philippines’ Wrapped 2020.

5. ROXANNE – Arizona Zervas
The pop-rap track became the first unsigned and fully independent artist to top the Spotify chart since the beginning of 2017.

4. Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat) – Jawsh 685 x Jason Derulo (June 2020 Top Pick)
The track entirely built off a sample of New Zealand music producer Jawsh 685‘s viral success “Laxed (Siren Beat)“.

3. Blinding Lights – The Weeknd
This song was everywhere the entire 2020 that it eventually became the number 1 song of multiple year-end charts such as the Spotify Wrapped, the US’s Billboard Hot 100, and the UK’s Official Singles Chart.

2. Say So – Doja Cat (April 2020 Top Pick)
It’s the funk and disco element that makes this one of the best songs that became viral in TikTok.

1. Dance Monkey – Tones and I (January 2020 Top Pick)
This was already the biggest song in Tones and I (born Toni Watson)’s hometown Australia in 2019. Then it became a commercial success outside the country the year after.

1. “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” – Jawsh 685 x Jason Derulo
A catchy siren beat from a New Zealand music producer has a popular culture dance on TikTok.

2. “Confidence” – Ocean Alley
Listened to Australian radio station Triple J’s Hottest 100 Of The Decade 2010s and this reggae rock jam gave me LSS the most.

3. “Savage Remix” – Megan Thee Stallion ft. Beyoncé
Both the original version and this Queen B-featuring remix are popular in TikTok.

This may not be a throwback track to most of us. But how ironic is it that despite the pandemic we are facing right now, a coffin dance became the funniest best meme that came out this year?

Has anyone seen “Ang Huling El Bimbo: The Musical” when it’s full pre-recorded performance was shown on YouTube for 2 days last May 2020? That was a world-class Filipino theatre! The hit musical was so great it made me researched, read articles, and watched documentaries on the Filipino mainstream rock disruptors the Eraserheads.

3. “Cariño Brutal” – Slapshock [2009 – MYX Live! Performance is not available in Spotify]
Slapshock was the first (and hopefully won’t be the last this year – dammit COVID-19!) Filipino rock act I’ve seen this decade when they performed at a Dickies event in SM Cebu last January.
